Alla Vecchia Bettola, Florence, 2/26/15

A cozy irregularly shaped room with a bar with a number of hanging hams and such on one end and the rest of the place filled with tables and stools – easy to size to any party. I love the kind of casual place with the hooks for coats interspersed with a variety of “art” collected over the years. A noisy and lively room where we heard mostly Italian being spoken and the vibe was very friendly.

They have a house Chianti unless you prefer a list but you can’ beat the price of 2 euros per person for whatever you drink of the oversized bottle. It just added to the ambiance. Their bread was a little on the dry side and mostly forgettable except for their housemate focaccia which almost seemed a cross of biscotti and was quite tasty.

This place claims to originated the tomato vodka pasta (sauce bettola) and they did make a really fine one – creamy, spicy and a gorgeous color. The artichoke pasta was good but paled in comparison. We tried their 2 nightly specials and the fried rabbit and artichoke was wonderful and pork rib meat a little less flavorful but nice. To get our proper overload of artichoke we included a salad of the them which was a delightful new variation on this food. We finished with their housemade cheesecake which was creamy and fluffy and reminded me slightly of the great version we’d had in Spain. I’d probably be a regular here if we lived closer!
