Trattoria Ruggero, Florence, 2/28/15

IMG_1156A two room place that seemed a little out of the way but worth the walk. A friendly and casual place with a small menu. We started with their mixed meat antipasto and all the hams and sausages were quite good and finally a good bread basket to accompany them! We didn’t know the warm liver crostini was part of it or maybe the waiter just brought it to us – hard to tell – but it was a pleasant surprise. It had a ground meat like consistency instead of the usual smooth texture and was served warm with a broth that slightly moistened the crostini.

We each had a bowl of soup. Charles had wanted to try Ribollita which is a bread soup with all sorts of vegetables and I thought the corn soup sounded interesting. Both were quite thick and had a slight touch of spice. His was the more interesting but both could have been a meal in itself. This turned out good for me as my roast pork was mostly dry and a little cardboard like. His pigeon was nice but a little more on the done side than he’d have liked. The accompanying artichokes were nicely cooked and flavorful. There were 2 torts of the day and I couldn’t decided and the waitress kindly offered to bring me a 1/2 slice of each instead of having to choose. If only more were so accommodating! Both were lovely but the chocolate was definitely superior, a lick the plate kind of thing!
