A Taberna da Rua das Flores, Lisbon, 1/28/16

A really small place with a chalkboard menu that changes daily. They have bottles of wine but most seemed to order carafes or portions thereof. The service was helpful and very friendly. Portions are large, reasonably priced and they are happy to have you share them and will bring out as courses instead of all at once.

We started with a mild cheese that came with a spicy red sauce. The mild cheese could have been put on bread but we really enjoyed dipping chunks in the tasty sauce.

Next was the fried mackerel and the rice with spinach. The small fish are eaten whole and were delicious. They were fried to a perfect crisp and the only downside was the flavor of the fish was diminished because of that, but I’d call it a good trade off.  The spinach turned out to be a more bitter green and the dish was almost soupy. It was a great dish for a cool winter day and was a nice texture contrast to the fish.

Our other main was the curried chicken. The waitress cautioned that it was spicy but to our tastes it was just fine. The flavor was tremendous and the only thing I’d change here would be to use dark meat as that would keep the meat more moist. I found myself spooning out the last of the curry sauce to savor every bit.

They offered several desserts and the lemon-ginger pudding was a bit grainy and had a sauce like would have been on flan. It sounded better than it was but that was okay cause the caramel-almond Molotoff was a huge piece of a light cake (a cross between angel food and meringue) smothered in caramel sauce and toasted almonds. It was quite nice and amazingly not overly sweet.  If we had been there longer I would not be surprised to find us there again!
