Gonzalez Restaurant, Dallas, 6/15/16, 7/15/16 & 7/29/16

Gonzalez has 2 locations, this is from the one on Jefferson in Oak Cliff. It is a good sized place but not big enough to avoid lines on prime times. They also do a healthy take out business.  It is made up of 2 rooms with a small waiting area in the entry room. There are TVs going of past or current sporting events but the sound is down so the Mexican music can be heard. It is a lively buzz. It’s one of my favorite spots in Dallas and we go often.

Some of our favorite orders are Chilaquiles (scrambled eggs mixed with corn tortillas and mixed with spicy green sauce served with carne guisada or beef stew, Guisado de Puerco, Mole Enchiladas, Chicken Picadillo (shredded chicken meat with onion, tomatoes and peppers, not spicy), Beef Steak Ranchero (steak with tons of sautéed onions and a grilled jalapeñ0), Cheese Enchiladas (served with a cumin meatless chili sauce) and crispy tacos (amazing shells filled with chicken or beef and topped with lettuce, tomato and onion). The chicken flautas are okay but not on par with the aforementioned dishes. All the staff are friendly and speak good English but some are better than others. We had one of our favorites on this visit.

Frankie liked the large glasses of ice tea, just sorry their spoons and straws don’t make it to the top

Everyone starts with chips and salsa and their house sauce is a warm one, unlike any I’ve had but it grows on you. You can request to also get salsa fresca which is a more traditional salsa and great on the chicken picadillo.

Today we had chicken Molé enchiladas which were delicious. The tortillas are so tender they melt in your mouth and the molé sauce has a addictive taste.  The rice is flavored with cumin and it and the beans are not throwaways. You can order this small cup of guacamole to go with any plate that doesn’t include it.

The Guisado de Puerco is chunks of tender pork served with a spicy red sauce that is equally addictive and a small guacamole. All main dishes come with 2 of their thick flour tortillas which are perfect for mopping up guisado gravy.
