Le Roi Fou is a small 2 room restaurant serving French style food.  They opened in April of 2017 and were voted best new restaurant in Scotland in a local publication.  The front room has nice light from 2 big windows looking out on the street. The back room has nice windows but less light.  Eclectic music play in the background.  They offer a 2 course fixed price menu at lunch as well as an a la carte menu.  We chose to order from the a la carte menu.

Warm and soft focaccia is served with olive oil as we awaited our meal.  It was quite tasty.

The pan seared foie gras was served with damson plum, apple and tarragon.  It was an amazingly large portion.  The plum was tart and the apple crisp and sweet.  Both went well with the rich foie gras. It was cooked to a medium pink, slightly firm and not swimming in grease, as many are.  It was a fairly mild flavor and I did not detect the tarragon mentioned on the menu.  It might have been better with a stronger sauce.  It was good but not great.

Pan roasted new season grouse was served with market vegetables, cranberries and a bread sauce.  Alongside was some of the braised bird mixed with pearl barley and bacon.  This was amazingly tasty.  The roasted bird was tender with an expected gamey flavor.  The vegetables included snow peas, beans and chard.  A mix of Scottish mushrooms was also on the plate.  The bread sauce brought it together and was rich and flavorful.

We had the roasted pineapple with vanilla ice cream for dessert.  It was served with an orange, pineapple and rum sauce that was thick with vanilla flecks.  The pineapple was still fairly crisp and thus the sweetness was not fully rendered.  It would have been easier to eat also if it was softer.  It was okay but not nearly as good as it sounded.

A final treat of plum jellies and shortbread came with coffee.  The shortbread was quite good.
