Ron Gastrobars is a large place with one Michelin star.  There are several locations, all with different themes.  Here there was a large indoor dining room that was not being used as everyone was seated on the huge covered patio that looked out on a busy street.  Soft rock music played in the background and the small tables were set with salt and pepper grinders.  A very casual crowd was there, many as family units.  The menu offered a number of small dishes which they suggested you get several per person and split them.  We opted to order the Tomahawk beef chop for 2.  The problem we had was that they told us it would take 45 minutes to cook but it ended up being twice that long.  I wasn’t sure what the problem was but worried that it might have tainted my experience here – which did not leave me satisfied or anxious to ever return.

We started with a gin and tonic which was nicely made but fairly un-potent.  It did use Fever Tree tonic and the Bombay Sapphire but for 13.50 euros was a bit of a rip.  We chose wine for the rest of the wait and eventually the meal.

They brought out bread with a caramelized onion butter topped with bacon and some pickled onions.  The pickled onions were tart and sweet and the bread was a nice crusty variety.  The crispy bits of bacon on the butter were really fun.

The meat was dry aged for several weeks and came with fries and sauce.  We ordered a side of brocolli.  When you ordered this the chef will come out to your table and show you the choice of cuts and you can pick the one you want.  The meat was properly cooked and nicely tender but not with an incredible beef taste.  It was a generous amount for 2.  Any of the meat selections come with bone marrow baked, fries from Frietboutique and bearnaise sauce.  The bone marrow came with herbs on the top and was best spread on the meat.  The fries were crisp and soft inside – very good.  The Bearnaise sauce was very good and nice on the meat and the fries.  Another sauce was served but no explanation was given, so we weren’t sure what it was for.  Our brocolli never came.

We passed on dessert because we were tired of sitting there.

  1. That is an awfully long time to wait! The food does loo good, but I would get tired, too! Great blog, sorry it did not live up to expectations!
