At Sara’s Table/Chester Creek Cafe, Duluth, 11/9/17

At Sara’s Table Chester Creek Cafe is a large place on a corner, that used to be Taran’s Market.  It attempts to use local products and grows some of its own in their garden.  When you enter you have the choice of doors, one to the restaurant and one to the bar.  A bit of the kitchen in visible when you enter the restaurant side, as are some shelves filled with souvenier and  books.  There is also a counter that sells baked goods and hand dipped ice cream as well as a small seating area near a fireplace.  The restaurant itself winds around in a “U” shape around the rest of the kitchen.  There are booths and tables and finally the end is a library room lined with filled bookshelves and windows to the parking lot.

Many of the materials composing the space were reclaimed fromt he original grocery that was there. The menu offers breakfast (till 3:00), lunch (11:00 – 3:00),  some specials that are on a card on the table and the dinner menu which I did not see.  They have a nice selection of wine by the glass as well as bar drinks.  Service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere is very cozy in the library.  The food is good, not great, but good enough that I’d go back again.  Good ingredients and thoughtful preparation make this a place worthy of a visit if you’re in the area.

We tried the Ham and Gouda melt that included Beeler’s ham, smoked gouda, caramelized onions, honey mustard all on Delta Diner (they have their own Frankie entry) whole wheat sourdough bread.  On the side you have the options of kettle chips, hand-cut french fries or carrot sticks.  We chose fries for both.  The ham had nice flavor and the cheese was melted in with the sweet onions.  It was pretty good and one I’d order again.

We also tried the Pecan Chicken which was pecan crusted baked chicken breast, cranberry-peach chutney, creamy brie on a croissant. It was either half a croissant or a small one split in half with the crusted chicken on top. The house-made chutney was really good and added a fun component to the fairly dull chicken.  The melted brie was another good choice to bring some life to this sandwich.  Although there was nothing wrong with this choice the other was that much better that I wouldn’t order it again.  The fries were good with bits of crispness and a good potato flavor.

We ended the meal with a piece of their carrot cake.  It was moist and topped with a tasty icing and bits of nuts.  It was really tasty and a good end to the meal.
