Barbec’s has been around as long as I can remember. Located in an old Howard Johnson’s building it serves large, cheap portions of southern style food.  The service is efficient but sometimes you’ll have to ask for something rather than a waitress noticing and asking. They seem to be best known for their beer biscuits which are better at breakfast than at lunch, when they’ve been out of the oven for awhile. They offer a large menu and well priced specials for breakfast and lunch, but it is a cash only business. With the lunch specials there is a huge choice of sides to go with your entree, of which you’ll see a preponderance of chicken fried steak.

Of the sides we tried on 2 visits the fried okra and spicy homefries were pretty good, whereas the greens and mashed potatoes were so-so.  The chicken fried steak had a nice crispy exterior and tender meat but the gravy lacked a needed pepper spiciness.  On one occasion we connected with the waitress and she brought us a complimentary cookie for dessert. This place packs it in for weekend breakfasts but otherwise the large seating area is adequate to seat locals and tons of folks on their way to or from the Dallas Arboretum.  Nothing to write home about in the food but for what it offers it is a fun spot to visit every so often.
