Restaurant Hasenburg, Basel, 10/26/19

Hasenburg was in a small old building with lots of wood on the walls with art above and a newish brick floor.  The bare wood tables were spaced closely and set with paper placemats and napkins.  Windows to the busy street were on one wall and no music was in the background.  Service was friendly and efficient.  They offered a lunch menu, even on Saturday, or offer their regular menu items.  We ordered off their regular menu and the food was simple but delicious.  It was really busy and they do have a couple outdoor tables. Each entree came with a house salad and sliced bread.

The bread was fine and the salad nicely dressed.  The seasoning was quite nice and the greens fresh.

A trio of grilled sausages – veal, pork and mixed meat – served with onion sauce and Rösti was good.  The sausages were all moist , tender and flavorful and the onion gravy a good enhancement.  The star of the plate was the rösti, thought.  Tender, tasty potatoes fried to a golden finish were buttery, crisp and delicious.

Panfried sliced veal strips in mushroom cream sauce served with Rösti was another good plate.  The veal strips were tender and the mushroom sauce rich and a perfect accompaniment.  The potatoes were splendid here too and great mixed with the gravy or eaten on their own.  They were not at all greasy, just a buttery crisp high.

Dessert of the day was hazelnut and cream which was a meringue bottom topped with hazelnut “vermicelli” and whipped cream.  Some strawberry sauce (?) added a bit of sweetness as the dish itself was not overly sweet.  But it did offer good textural contrasts and it was fun to eat.
