Kounty Quarthouse is a large bar/restaurant just outside of Superior, Wisconsin. They were featured on the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives TV show and got quite a bit of notice from that, however they sold a little over a year ago. The sale did include all the recipes and information that got them the original notice, but maybe some soul is missing because the inventors are no longer running the show? Even though the sign indicates otherwise, they only take cash and checks right now.
The room has a good sized bar, lots of hi-top tables, some regular tables and a couple booths. The ceilings are low and the walls are covered with signs and just a couple TVs. Low music played in the background when we were there for a late lunch. There is popcorn in a machine available for free snacking. They feature a large number of tap beers with a concentration on locally produced ones. The menu is large and as with other signs in the place, follows a court based theme. Items mentioned on the TV show are clearly marked on the menu.
We tried 2 of those sandwiches, which both come with hand cut fries and coleslaw. The Chipotle Brisket was a little short on brisket but came with a huge cheese biscuit that was crumbly. The taste was good but the balance was off.
The Crispy Pork Belly was much better. A generous amount of pork belly was lightly fried to a nice crisp but not enough to destroy the taste. It was smothered in tasty Asian slaw and a sauce. It was on a nice fresh doughy roll that was too much bread for me but nothing wrong with it. I would have substituted something else for the accompanying coleslaw since the sandwich already had a good supply and the tastes didn’t mesh. Otherwise the coleslaw was ordinary but not overly drenched in mayo, as so many are. The fries looked spectacular but were limp. They still had nice potato taste but were a disappointing texture. If you’re in the area, this could be worth a stop just to try some of the interesting combinations.
