The Adelaide Oyster House, St. John’s, NL, Canada, 6/29/19

The Adelaide Oyster House is a small place on a main street of town that opened in 2014.  They have one large picnic table in the window and lots of stools around the long bar and small, closely set tables backing up to the wall.  They offer lots of locally brewed tap beers as well as a full bar.  Loud, older rock music plays in the background, exposed ductwork runs across the ceiling, the walls are a combination of wood and brick and one end of the place houses the small open kitchen.  On weekends they serve brunch all day.  It’s a friendly and welcoming place but the server was not overly directive in how much or suggestions to order.  Plates are easily split which we did so we could try a number of things.

The kitchen sent out Sweet Cornbread and agave drizzle to start our meal.  The totally moist cornbread had a lovely crisp top and great texture.  The syrup was a tasty pairing with the nice warm cornbread.

Chicken chilaquiles contained tortilla chips, green salsa, crispy chicken, 5 brothers cheese and egg.   The chips had a good amount of corn flavor and it tasted like a lot of avocado had been blended in.  The cheese was mixed in with the other ingredients to yield a spicy dish with a good amount of texture and flavor.

The pulled pork pancake was a buttermilk pancake topped with roasted pork carnitas and chipotle maple.  The pork was more of a pulled pork than carnitas, which I think of as chunks.  It needed the crisp texture of the carnita to contrast with the soft thick pancake.  The sauce was sweet and topped with crispy onion bits that were quite flavorful.  It was a nice dish but not excellent.  Perhaps if the pork was on the side it would not have all turned out so mushy.  The tender pancake didn’t seem to compliment the other ingredients.

A Smash Burger was beef patties, cheddar, mustard, dill pickles and home fries.  The tasty meat was on an excellent bun and drippy with sauce.

It came with good fried potatoes chunks that were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.  They were very good and accented with some chopped scallion.
