Old Mill Tasty Shop, Wichita, KS., 4/10/26

exterior – 604 E Douglas Ave, Wichita, KS 67202

The Old Mill Tasty Shop has been in business over 90 years.  They started in 1932 and have been under just two families of ownership in all that time. They are open everyday, but Sunday, 11-3.  They serve a variety of sandwiches as well as having a marble countered soda fountain.  It was a medium-sized place with stools at the fountain counter and booths on the opposite side of the room.  Small tables filled the rest of the room with an old wooden cooler in the front holding ice creams and such.  A tile floor, brick walls and high tin ceiling complete the look of something that’s been around for awhile.  Servers were efficient and knowledgeable about the food and the place.  It was a great place serving tasty food.  They have some Mexican dishes as well as a daily special but their sandwich selection caught my eye along with the fountain.  If you have the chance stop in – you won’t be disappointed.

Food

They offered an array of malt and shake flavors but I opted for the chocolate malt.  This used hand dipped ice cream (as opposed to soft serve) and didn’t mess with toppings.  The thick drink came out with the metal container holding the rest of your drink.  It was wonderful.

The toasted chicken salad club mixed in bacon, lettuce and tomato on the three slices of bread.  Here the chicken was shredded and mixed with mayo and spread on both sides of the middle layer of bread.  All the rest was mixed in to make a very tasty sandwich. Each sandwich was served with a choice of a side and my husband chose the baked beans.  They were cooked nicely in a sweet style with bits of bacon.  I loved them.

The liverwurst sandwich also had lettuce, mayo and red onion on the thick white bread slices.  Their white bread was outstanding.  It was made by a local bakery and yeasty flavored with great texture.  The liverwurst was a fun throwback to my childhood and mixed well with the onion on that great bread.  Lovely.  I chose the potato salad for my side and it was thick chunks of nicely cooked potato in a mustard/mayo dressing.  Very good and hearty.

Green chili was made with ground meat and topped with cheese and served with a tortilla.  It was nicely flavored with a hint of spice on the finish.  The tortilla was okay and if you wanted it to be more filling you could eat it but we just wanted to taste their chili and it was good.

The server said they were known for their carrot cake so we split a piece of it.  The moist, well seasoned piece of cake was topped with a thick spread of sweet icing.  There were some nuts in the cake but no raisins.   The icing was different from the usual cream cheese icing on carrot cake but I can’t tell you what the difference was just that it was really good and perfect with the cake.
