The Grateful Bread started in 1991 and new ownership took over in 2023. They had an independent building with a to-go window as well as 2 dining rooms inside. Also inside, they did a constant business of those picking up bakery items to go. The best I understood was that they started as a bakery of breads and pastries but expanded into plates for breakfast and lunch. The name was a play on the Grateful Dead Band – with the staff wearing tie-dyed shirts or ones that said “everybody must get sconed”. They do a lot of community support with unsold bread and pastries being donated to the local food bank. While we were in eating several new items appeared in the front cases. A couple twists on the place was that all their eggs were served only scrambled and they offered a discount if you paid in cash. People lined up to be the first in and I can see why when we came later one day and had to wait 45 minutes for a table. Service was very slow that day so we knew to be the line the next time we came and service moved at a better pace then. The entry room had chairs for waiting and windows on one wall. The second room was surrounded by window with a more modern feel. Both had lots of art on the walls and the bathrooms had lots of lyrics from songs on the wall. The food was served in generous portions and pretty tasty, although it did need added sauce of some kind. It’s worth a trip when you’re in the area.

Food
The Black Bean Chili Omelette was made with housemade chili, cheddar and salsa. Omelettes were made with 3 eggs and served with potatoes and your choice of toast of biscuits. We both chose biscuits both days and you should too – they were small but delicious. In a plastic cup on the plate was some of their housemade strawberry jam. It had a lot of strawberry flavor but no solid berries. The omelette was good especially when mixed with some of the salsa. The potatoes were well browned with a light crisp and some seasoning.
Friend of the Devil Scramble was made with sausage, pepperjack cheese, green chiles and peppers. All scrambles were served with oven-roasted potatoes and choice of toast or house made biscuits. The scramble was good but dull, the eggs were a bit dry in the scramble and it really benefitted from additon of tabasco. But when I added some of the salsa from the omelette it was much better. From the description I expected much more flavor from the mix. The divine biscuits were as above.
The Box of Rain Scramble was made with broccoli, spinach, grilled potatoes, peppers, caramelized onions, mushrooms and cheddar cheese. We both ordered a side of salsa ($2) to go with them. This was a favorite of our server and I could see why. It was filled with fun fresh vegetables and even better with the added salsa, but it did have great flavor. However it was too much for one person. The biscuits were once again the star of the plate with a wonderful texture and taste.
We did try a marionberry scone but I forgot to take a photo before we started eating but you can see them whole in the counter photo. It was good but on the dry side and very crumbly. We got a cherry almond scone and a slice of blueberry cake to go for the next moring and the scone again was crumbly but with a bit more flavor. The cake was lovely, staying moist with texture a lot like a muffin. Sorry I didn’t get photos other than the group counter ones at the beginning.
