Grateful Bread Bakery, Pacific City, OR., 7/9 &10/26

building – 34805 Brooten Rd, Pacific City, OR 97135-8033

The Grateful Bread started in 1991 and new ownership took over in 2023.  They had an independent building with a to-go window as well as 2 dining rooms inside.  Also inside, they did a constant business of those picking  up bakery items to go.  The best I understood was that they started as a bakery of breads and pastries but expanded into plates for breakfast and lunch.  The name was a play on the Grateful Dead Band – with the staff wearing tie-dyed shirts or ones that said “everybody must get sconed”.   They do a lot of community support with unsold bread and pastries being donated to the local food bank.  While we were in eating several new items appeared in the front cases.  A couple twists on the place was that all their eggs were served only scrambled and they offered a discount if you paid in cash.  People lined up to be the first in and I can see why when we came later one day and had to wait 45 minutes for a table.  Service was very slow that day so we knew to be the line the next time we came and service moved at a better pace then.  The entry room had chairs for waiting and windows on one wall.   The second room was surrounded by window with a more modern feel.  Both had lots of art on the walls and the bathrooms had lots of lyrics from songs on the wall.  The food was served in generous portions and pretty tasty, although it did need added sauce of some kind.  It’s worth a trip when you’re in the area. Alder Wood Bistro, Sequim, WA., 7/11/24

exterior – 139 W Alder St, Sequim, WA 98382

Alder Wood Bistro was in a house-like building with several rooms open for dining and a large patio and a good amount of parking around the building.  A few booths and lots of tables made up the seating that had music in the background, sound absorbing panels on the ceiling, art for sale on the walls, lots of windows to the outside and decorations scattered about.  There was a full bar and a nice wine selection.  The food was billed as “the finest local, organic and sustainable produced ingredients”.  They have a wood fired oven for pizzas and offer a gluten-free cauliflower crust as well as noting what other menu items are vegan or gluten-free.  Their menu also had a number of nightly specials as well as drink specials.  I would go back, it was pretty good, and the service was super. Coneflower Creamery, Omaha, 5/8/22

exterior – 3921 Farnam St, Omaha, NE 68131

Coneflower Creamery is the inspiration of Founder/Chef Brian Langbehn and Katie Arant Chef/Co-Owner.  They had both worked as pastry chefs in various kitchens and dreamed of opening a farm to table ice cream shop featuring small batch artisan ice cream.  Their website even lists the local farms where they get the flavoring ingredients for their ice cream.  Their flavors have the Classics that are always on the menu as well as Signatures which highlight seasonal ingredients and plays on favorite foods and drinks. They also have sauces, toppings, floats, sundaes and the ice cream can be in a cone or a cup.  Their waffle cones were especially great.  One thing that impressed me was the way the end was folded over so no leaking while you’re eating occured.  The rich, thick and smooth ice cream is perfect in one of these cones.   The end of March they announced that a second location is pending in the Ashton Building.  If you can, try this place. El Green-Go’s, Anchorage, 8/2&3/18

exterior
exterior

El Green-Go’s is a permanently installed food truck serving local, organic Mexican and American Cuisine.  They source local  and organic ingredients for their food.  It is mostly breakfast and lunch, closing at 5:00 pm.  Interestingly, they are located right across the street from the Snow City Cafe and we chose to eat here twice rather than go back and stand in line across the street.   A friendly young couple run the place with Tyler doing the cooking and Crystal taking orders, bringing out food and taking your money.  The menu had few ingredients combined in a number of different ways.  Many include a choice of protein which were pork, chicken, tofu or halibut (for an additional $6).  In the back he had a grill/smoker set up where he cooked the meat and it also provided a wonderful aroma for your dining experience. They offer to make any of their items vegan or gluten free for no additional charge.   Continue reading
