Maybe Lately’s is a small place in the little town of Viroqua, in the Driftless region. Known for their creative dishes for breakfast and lunch, they also have Detroit style pizza on Monday nights. We were there for breakfast and they had a few tables in the front entry room, a couple high-tops along the wall to the kitchen and a large patio out the side door. Music in the kitchen bled into the dining area and the decorations were an eclectic mix, including a “shrine” to Dolly Parton, which apparently was there before her recent passing. There was a lot of hype for their cinnamon rolls but unfortunately they are only available on Sat and Sun. Our server, Davielle, was very friendly and helpful, pointing out that the sides menu offers a lot of smaller portions in case we wanted to try more things. The food was not only creative and made with high quality ingredients but also very tasty. I’d be a regular if I lived closer.

The Breakfast Burrito contained scrambled eggs, cheddar, roasted potatoes, salsa verde, pickled vegetables, chile garlic mayo and choice of protein of which he chose bacon. It was a well stuffed burrito in a tender, thin tortilla. My husband was pleased with it but did add some hot sauce to the mix.
The Veggie Hash was made with seasonal vegetables, mushrooms and roasted potatoes topped with two fried eggs, salsa verde and browned butter squash cream. I chose a biscuit as my bread and it came with some house made blueberry-strawberry jam. The eggs were cooked nicely and blended well with the beautifully fresh spinach, red onion, red pepper, and potatoes. It was a really tasty mix with the vegetables cooked to tenderness but not mush. The sauce was good blended in with the egg yolks. The biscuit was dense but tasty and the jam was sweet and delicious. There was a packet of butter for the biscuit which is the black rectangle in the photo.
You could order a variety of sides one of which was their French Toast. It was a thick slice of homemade bread dusted with powdered sugar and served with local maple syrup. The thin syrup was sweet and good and perfect with the cinnamon infused French toast. It was not the creamiest rendition but with good flavor and a really thick slice of bread. I liked it but the hash was even better.
