Graziano Brothers, Des Moines, 4/23/26

building – 1601 S Union St, Des Moines, IA 50315

Graziano Brothers has been in business since 1912 and are known for their Italian sausage.  It was founded by Francesco and Luigi Graziano who immigrated to America in 1903, then worked for the Great Western Railway and finally settled in Des Moines to start a grocery business.  Now the small grocery is in an area known as Little Italy.  It looks like a large business from the building but it’s a relatively small indoor space that’s packed with shelves of Italian products.  In the back of the store is the deli counter where lots of people were standing with no sign of where to order.  It’s the midwest, though, and people are friendly so conversations start.  In a short while one of the staff behind the counter nods to who’s next and takes their order as well as a few folks behind and then leaves to go make the orders. With a number of people waiting for sandwiches it was hard not to get in the way of the shoppers with baskets but all was congenial.   There are no tables inside or out so all orders are to go or eaten in your car, but there is a lot of parking.  The latter is what we did, which isn’t the best for photos or neatness but the sausage sandwich was worth the trouble.  Give it a try when you’re in the area. Sam’s Italian Deli and Market, Fresno, 10/29/25

building (seating behind grate) – 2415 N 1st St, NW Corner of First & Clinton, Fresno, CA 93703-1202

Sam’s Italian Deli and Market was opened in 1980 by Sam and Angela Marzilliano and their son Nick.  It’s a popular place as you read online but reality proved it, in that we arrived at 10:10, they open at 10:00 and there was already a line to order food.  They offer freshly made deli sandwiches and a huge selection of Italian meats, cheeses, pastas, salads, dry goods and a large selection of wines.  There’s a lot of parking on 2 sides of the corner building with a small covered patio and tables next to the entry if you want to eat on site.  As you enter the building get your number and then study the huge menu hanging above the deli counter so you can order when your number is called.  You can then pay or shop and pay when you name is called and your food is ready.  You can also pre-order online and pick it up that way.  The sandwiches were cut in two and first rate in quality.   I’d go back often if I lived nearby.  Check it out on your way to visit Yosemite or if you’re in the Fresno area. Reading Terminal Market, Philadelphia, 5/20/21

Market exterior

Reading Terminal Market is one of America’s oldest and largest public markets in a National Historic Landmark building. They have produce, meats, fish, flowers, cheese, bread and sweets to create your own meal or they have a number of restaurants. While we enjoyed walking the aisles and seeing what was for sale we tried two of the most famous sandwiches there -Tommy DiNic’s and Hershel’s East Side.  Both often have a line but we got there early and were able to easily buy from both and find a table in the center dining area, where all the tables are separated by plexiglas.
