Frattoria Mangi & Bevi is a small place of 2 rooms with the third room being the kitchen.  It is a bright place with no music in the background and the tables are covered with plastic.  It seemed to be mostly populated with local, regular patrons.  The floor is tile, the walls are brick and lots of old photos decorate the walls.  Not much English is spoken by the staff.   It serves good, home style comfort food.  The menu is passed out with a small card.  You write on the card what you want and turn it into the waiter.  He brings stuff out as it is ready.  Service was efficient, fairly fast and portions good sized but not huge.  Wine is available by liter or fraction of and served in pitchers with plastic cups or they have beer.   Continue reading

Trattoria Dal Cavalier Gino, Rome, 4/13/18

Trattoria Gino covers two rooms packed with small tables and a happy vibe throughout.  The ceilings are painted with flowers and stones and the walls are decorated with memorabilia giving the place a cozy feeling.  The place appeared to have way more Italians than tourists, and many seemed to be regulars.   No music plays in the background but the hum of conversation surrounds you.  Our waiter was exceptionally friendly and helpful and spoke fine English.  He really made the meal fun.  They offer a good sized menu with lots of traditional Roman dishes.  One caution is that they don’t take credit cards, it’s cash only, but everything is pretty reasonable.  I highly recommend this place be on your list if you have the time and can get a reservation.   Continue reading

Restaurante conTenedor, Seville, 1/20/18

Restaurante conTenedor is a good sized place with only a chalkboard menu that is propped on a chair on top a mini-chair.   Bare wood tables are set with medium sized cloth napkins and a variety of chairs.  It is fairly bright with a really lively atmosphere and a good amount of art on the walls, exposed duct work and no musical background.  When the place filled the noise level was significant probably because there are few absorptive surfaces.  There is an old looking machine at the front that is used to print a business card for you, that declares it is a slow food restaurant.  Service was helpful, efficient and super friendly.   We shared a number of items that were well recommended by our fabulous server Mercedes, who also provided great translations of the menu.   Continue reading
