Tipico’s Mexican Food, Dallas, 8/5/24

building –3118 W Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX 75220

Tipico’s Mexican Food was in a former Pizza Hut building with a large very busy parking lot outside.  Booth seating lined the perimeter and various sizes of tables are in the middle.  Windows with shades were above the booth seats.  They are open daily from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm and offer no-frills Mexican fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  They did have beer on the menu but I saw no bar for other drinks.  You seat yourself and when you’re through, note your table number and your check is at the register by the door.  It’s very near to Love Field airport but it also seemed frequented by many of the workers in the neighborhood.  Fast service, good prices and giant portions are part of the draw but the food has more soul than fast food flavor.   There are daily specials which are very reasonable but many Tex-Mex favorites are on the menu.  (If you can read the tiny print on the menu).   It was not a particularly convenient place to where I live but I’m glad I went and wouldn’t be against going again if I’m in the area.

The chips come with 2 salsas.  The chips were thin but not too much so and not greasy but good on the crispness.  Both salsas were very watery and both had hotness.  The oranger one contained a different chile and was served warm whereas the more traditional red sauce was served cooled.  They seemed small but with the kick of either you didn’t need that much.

The guacamole comes in 2 sizes at $3.25 and $4.25 and as it was only an extra dollar, we got the large.  The large was 3 scoops with a side salad and extra limes.  It had good flavor and was mostly smooth but did have some chunks.   It was nicely made with ripe enough avocados to give it flavor and was good alone, with chips or mixed with foods.

The Guisado de Puerco con Chile Rojo was a pork stew with red chile sauce and served with rice, beans and housemade tortillas.  There was lots of tasty sauce with the meat chunks which varied in their tenderness.  The flour tortillas were freshly made but didn’t hold up on the table – they quickly turned quite stiff.  The dish had a nice amount of spiciness and mixed well with the rice.  Both rice and beans were fine.

The Chile Relleno is on the menu as a poblano chile stuffed with Monterey Jack cheese but when I ordered it the server asked if I wanted beef, cheese or a combination.  I took the combination and it came with rice, beans and homemade tortillas.  The poblano was large and packed with cheese and velvety ground beef.   The beef had little extra seasoning but it did add to the overall effect.  The coating on the pepper was puffy and eggy but really wanted a sauce to go with it.  If you want cheese this dish is for you, but it is fairly greasy.
