Perilli a Testaccio dal 1911, Rome, 12/13/15

A fairly large place serving food typical of Rome since 1911! The day we were there the place was filled with families and groups of friends. The waiters are helpful but busy. We tried a couple of their specialty pastas that seemed to be going to lots of tables, as were the artichokes.  The meat portions were quite generous with sides of delicious potatoes. Nothing ground breaking here, but a perfect place if you want a ‘home cooked’ meal of traditional food done well.

Bucatini alla Amatriciana: thick spaghetti with dried bacon and tomato. Very nice

Rigatoni alla Carbonara: rigatoni with egg, bacon and cheese. Really yellow! Pancetta is very crispy and intensely flavored. Great dish!

roast pork and potatoes. Great looking skin but not cooked to crackling stage. Lots of herbs. Some bites moist and wonderful, others a little drier. Potatoes quite tasty and all with a great sauce. Seemed like shank meat.

roast lamb and potatoes. Delicious lamb that was moist and not all all muttony. Not as herbed as the pork but quite succulent. Seemed like shoulder meat and came with a kidney that tasted like liver.
Chicory. Nice.

Trifle. It had such wild colors I had to try it. It was moist with lots of whipped cream. Totally different taste – not too sweet but sweet enough. Has bits of chocolate in one layer and topped with a wild strawberry.
