Irma’s Place (update), Clear Lake, 6/22/24

building – 955 US-63, Clear Lake, WI 54005

We visited Irma’s Place in January of this year and nothing has really changed in the physical space but they are now open every day except Wed for breakfast and lunch.   There’s plenty of parking in the lot in front and a side covered patio was there for outdoor dining but the sign said no service was available on the patio.  I noticed some of the art and photographs on the wall were for sale and they offered some cold coffee beverages, probably because it’s summer.  There were still baked goods to order or for sale.  Service was friendly and efficient with lots of refills on coffee.  It’s a place I’ll gladly visit again but now have a little more insight on what to order.  Their Mexican influenced options are well prepared.

Last time I really enjoyed their housemade cinnamon roll and asked the server about it versus the monkey bread French toast.  She said the latter was her favorite so I order one piece.  I liked that you can order by the piece or have a plate with 2 or 3 pieces, but with one it could be a side.  It’s cinnamon swirled bread made into French toast that is topped with butter and powdered sugar.   I found the Monkey bread French toast drier than the cinnamon roll, which was gooey and yummy.  I agreed to their offer to bring syrup and that helped, but it didn’t seem to be 100% maple based on the viscosity of the pour.   The two items are the same price and for me I’d have the cinnamon roll.

Hash brown mess was something I’d seen on the menu and even got a comment from a reader – it sounded that good.  It was hash browns topped with Maddie’s sausage gravy and two eggs fried over medium.  I wanted over easy instead and that was not a problem to change.  I loved the runniness of the yolks mixing with the gravy which was filled with lots of sausage.   However the gravy needed spiciness, which was helped with a bit of hot sauce but I’d rather it be more flavored with black pepper and spice in the preparation. The hashbrowns were fine but do lose crispness when topped with gravy.  It was good but  quesadilla I had last time was more satisfying.

The breakfast burrito was a flour tortilla filled with two scrambled eggs, peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, Pico de gallo, sour cream and your choice of meat – bacon, sausage or half – and it came with a half order of American fries.   We chose sausage for the meat.  The potatoes were very nicely prepared and the burrito was toasted on the outside of the tortilla. The inside ingredients were well mixed and distributed with lots of moistness from the onion, tomato and sauces but overall it was a little bland without the addition of hot sauce.  However the server brought 3 different sauces to chose from and that fixed any issue I had with it.  It’s another winner.

  1. I think I would love Irma’s Place. Menu looks good and the prices are reasonable.
I bet a little Jimmy Dean’s hot sausage would perk that stuff up a little bit. Yum!

  2. The hash brown mess is my kind of breakfast. Even when the components are segregated on the plate, my end result seems to often look like yours.

Sausage gravy definitely needs to be seasoned from the get-go; there’s only so much that table condiments and spices can do after the fact. And as Sharon suggested, some hot sausage is a great way to do it.
