KD’s Bear Den, Drummond, WI., 8/2/24

building – 52450 Wisconsin Ave, Drummond, WI 54832

KD’s Bear Den was in the heart of downtown Drummond in a building that has housed numerous other places over the years.  They are open Wed. through Sat with the kitchen closing before the bar some days and accept only cash.  It was a medium sized interior with seats at the bar for food and/or drinks as well as seating on the patio.    Carpet was on the floor, artificial flowers hung from the ceiling, there was a good sized parking lot outside, the TVs were on but muted, no music was in the background,  the walls were covered with signs and decorations and they had air conditioning.  Service was friendly and very effecient and the drinks were on the weak side.  Wednesday was the chicken dinner special and Friday was fish fry but hamburgers and pizza were also available.  We were there for fish fry and it was an early crowd and there was a short wait for a table.  The owner Katie seems to double as cook and came out to visit with some of the folks.  It was a good enough I might go back and try the chicken dinner.

Food

Fish fry could be ordered with 1, 2 or 3 pieces.  All come with cole slaw, toast and choice of fries or au gratin potatoes.  We both got 2 pieces, one with fries and the other with the au gratin.  The fish was cod and it stayed moist in the medium crisp coating.  It was plenty hot and the coating on the edge retained a good crispness.  The slaw had a lot of mayo and was a tad too sweet but was still tasty.  The toast was buttered and nicely done.   The fries seemed to be frozen and would rate an okay.  The star was the au gratin which was a generous portion with a wonderful consistency.   The potatoes were cooked to soft and the cheese blended in for a creamy consistency.  It may have been Velveta but either way, it worked.

  1. I think I would love this place. It looks like fun. In reading the menu, I have a question about the burgers. Why is lettuce, tomato and mayo considered California style? All our burgers have that unless you ask for it to be cut. You find the most fun places to go!

    1. Thanks! It’s a cozy spot. Not for sure about the origin of CA burger but I think it has to do with the availability of fresh lettuce and tomato there and so they started to add it to burgers. Most all the burgers in Wisc are not standard with the additions but are an option. Guess they started adding cheese if the wisdom followed 🤪
