The Western Cafe specializes in American home cooking, serving breakfast and lunch. It is in a building that dates to the 1870s and the place feels like it’s been there a while. There’s most always a line to wait for seating when you enter. A long counter with classic swivel stools is one side of the 2 rooms, with tables filling the rest of it and the smaller second room. Behind the counter is the pie container with fresh pies of the day and beside is the bin for their housemade cinnamon rolls. Parking is on the street, country music played in the background and the wood walls are covered with art, memorabilia and kitsch. They aim for an “old west” ambiance and they capture it. The line moved quickly and we snagged two seats at the counter for a fun and tasty meal. It’s not world-class food or cutting edge, but instead good solid and generous meals that I’d partake of regularly if it was in my town.

Food
We tried 2 of their most popular options. The Best in the West was a chicken fried steak that was hand-cut and breaded then served with homemade sausage gravy, two farm fresh eggs, hashbrowns and your choice of toast. This was brilliance as they served the steak on top of the gravy so it maintained a crispy exterior. The sausage gravy was well-spiced and the over easy eggs were hidden beneath the serving of hashbrowns. It was all quite good

The Bobcat Breakfast contained cinnamon roll French toast, two farm fresh eggs, hashbrowns and a choice of meat that I picked to be bacon. This was a perfect solution as I wanted to try a cinnamon roll but also wanted breakfast, this way I could get both on one plate. The over-easy eggs were cooked perfectly and the serving of bacon was very generous. The hashbowns were only lightly browned but not greasy at all. The cinnamon roll French toast came with warmed syrup and butter(which I don’t seem to have photographed). It was not pure maple syrup but a good variety. It was very moist on the inside with lots of cinnamon flavor. I would order this again if I went.

oh I love this sort of breakfast! Chicken fried steak is a delicacy, in my opinion, and cinnamon rolls call my name every single day! I just rarely find them. Oh so good to see this, thank you.
Thanks! It was funky and fun!
Yum! I love a good CFS!
Me too! This was genius to put the gravy underneath so it stayed crispy.
OMG Frankie’s face!
