Webb Custom Kitchen was in the space previously occupied by the Webb Movie Theatre. Opening in 2016 after a year of renovation, it’s a large space with the second story still intact and movies still playing above the open kitchen. Decorations are old projectors and movie equipment as well as walls covered with names of those who joined the Porterhouse Club by finishing their 40 oz. charbroiled steak. The center of the big downstairs room is a large bar that also has seating. Benches are used for wall seating and tables are in the middle. Parking is available in public lots nearby as it is in the heart of downtown. Music was in the background and the lighting was fairly bright, but we were there at lunch. The dinner menu offered more options to choose from but our lunch was good enough to make me want to go back to try more things. Service was friendly and they were happy to share some of the history of the building with us, even offering to let us walk around upstairs afterwards. Thumbs, or should I say paws, up on this one.

Food
A favorite of our server, the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich included shaved Smithfield ham, havarti, applewood smoked bacon, iceberg, and tomato with a buttermilk ranch dressing on a herbed brioche bun. The large piece of crispy chicken had a nice coating and was moist inside but could have used more seasoning. A good selection of other ingredients mixed well with the chicken for a fine sandwich. Every sandwich comes with a choice of a side item and we chose French fries with this one. They were a nice pile of crispy fries with a good soft potatoey interior.

One of their specialties was the Standard Hardware Burger. It came with applewood smoked bacon, grilled shallots, grilled portabellos, swiss, dijonnaise, iceberg lettuce, tomato and house garlic-jalapeno pickles on a herbed brioche. This was our favorite of the two sandwiches. The nicely cooked meat patty was flavorful and drippy. The bacon and grilled shallots really added to the flavor profile. It was so good. With this one we tried the truffle fries which were the same fries as the regular but coated with a truffle seasoning. If you like that flavor you would love these. They were wonderfully crispy tasty fries but I grew tired of the seasoning even though I kept wanting to eat one more.

Nice change of pace from Paris.
So much bigger but still good quality. Fascinating location.
It looks like we may have crossed paths. I was in the area — Charlottte, Cleveland, and Lexington NC in January — and almost went to a Gastonia barbecue place.
We will have to share travel schedules!
Only 40oz to get on the wall? I think you need to go over 60oz to get on the wall at Ward’s in Milwaukee! 😅
Indeed! That’s why they’re running out of room on the walls to post. It’s a 40 oz porterhouse – don’t think I specified.
