Ledford House (update), Albion, CA., 5/8/24

exterior – 3000 CA-1, Albion, CA 95410

Ledford House was visited in July of 2022.  The basic set up hasn’t changed much except that the large sign out front by the road blew down in recent storms and hasn’t been replaced.  That visit we ordered a la carte but this time we tried their Bistro Special menu which is a 3-course meal for just $35 that changes daily.  The same couple, Tony and Lisa Geer run the place and she was in the kitchen while he welcomed us and showed us to a lovely window table.  However, he is the breadmaker. The wine list features many local wines at a moderate price point and there is a full bar.  The view from every white cloth covered table is lovely with the Pacific Ocean rippling over the many rocks and providing the place with a good breeze.  They are open Wed – Sun and if you find yourself anywhere near Mendocino I’d make a reservation to dine here.

Food

While enjoying a finely made martini the server brought 2 types of bread and olives as well as olive oil for dipping.  Both were moist and doughy but I particularly liked the dark bread that had seeds and molasses flavor.  It was really good.

Fresh oysters were available on the half shell but we chose a nightly special of Baked Oysters to supplement our Bistro Meal.   The 6 oysters were mixed with bacon, garlic and herbs then topped with crispy bread crumbs.  These were excellent – great textures and loaded with flavor.

Malfouf Salad is a Lebanese cabbage slaw with olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and fresh herbs.  This was fresh and delicious and a wonderful change to the customary ‘dinner salad.’  It was light and refreshing and had very good flavor.

Rock Cod was braised with white beans, tomato, basil and topped with a black olive tapenade.  The large flake fish was nicely cooked and delicious with the other soupy ingredients.  This was a great dish to eat with some of that tasty bread.  It was a generous portion too.

Strawberry Rose Semifreddo was fairly  frozen yet still had good flavor.  It was light and perfectly acceptable but seemed less fun than the other courses.  A sweet fruity end to the meal that was basically fine.
