Denny’s Diner, Wisconsin Dells, 7/21/24

exterior – 2 W Munroe Ave, Wisconsin Dells, WI 53965

Denny’s Diner has been owned by the Van Schoyck family since 1980.  Named for Molly Van Schoyck’s husband Denny, it serves breakfast and lunch every day 6:30 am to 2:00 pm.  Filled with toys and collectables they are noteworthy for their daily baked cinnamon rolls.  Most importantly they are not in anyway affiliated with the national Denny’s chain restaurant.  Seating is in a number of booths next to the windows to the street and tables that can be re-arranged to accomodate groups of many sizes.  There is also seating at the counter.  After you’ve looked over the large menu you can entertain yourself with the 50s-60s music in the background as well as watching a toy train go round overhead or visit Superman in the old phone booth.  It’s a visual feast of items.  My advice is go for a drink and cinnamon roll of any variation and skip the rest of the food.  Please note that it is cash or check only.

Food

We tried a ham and cheese omelette.  With the omelettes they have a combo price if you want American fries or hash browns.  All come with a choice of toast or you can subsititute a cinnanmon roll for $2.50. With this omelette we had hashbrowns and white toast.  The toast was the best part of the plate.  The omelette was dry with rubbery cheese and the hashbrowns tasted of old oil.

The mushroom and cheese omelette was ordered also with hashbrowns but substituted a caramel pecan roll for the toast.  They also have caramel apple rolls and plain cinnamon rolls with homemade frosting.  The last one looks more like a croissant shape and I believe is the one to get but I’m a sticky bun nut so caramel pecan it was for me.  It was nicely gooey with soft interior and nice crisp on the bottom.  Purchased alone the rolls are all $3.75 each.  As to this omelette, it was worse than the ham because they used canned mushrooms which I really cannot stand. Luckily the roll was plenty big enough to fill me up without even eating it all.
