Clancy’s (update), New Orleans, 12/19/24

building – 6100 Annunciation St, New Orleans, LA 70118

Clancy’s is another favorite of ours and so has appeared many times on this website, the last time about a year ago.  The menu is much smaller at lunch but we got to sit in the front room which is brighter and more festive during the holidays.  Reservations are a must as the place was packed by the time we finished.  The ambiance is another old school place with tuxedoed servers and white cloth-covered tables.  It’s outside the quarter and popular with locals and tourists.  Again here you have your favorites but there were subtle changes to the salad.  This is a first-rate staff that doesn’t rush you and is willing to bring items out individually for you to share.  We’ve found that’s a good way to try more things.  This is definitely a place that should be on your list to visit.

Food

Their bread service presents the loaf of New Orleans-style French bread in a paper bag with a slab of butter.  It’s warm and wonderful.  Light on the inside, it has a very crackly exterior.  They will bring you more if you eat it all.

Fried Oysters with brie were perfectly fried oysters topped with melted brie and sitting on a bit of spinach.  The oysters had a good crisp exterior and the melted cheese made a sauce of sorts for them.   They came 4 to an order and it would have been easy to eat them all.  Yum

Clancy’s jumbo lump crabmeat maison salad was a nice mix of greens topped with a huge scoop of well-dressed jumbo lump crab meat.  On the side are a couple of pale tomato wedges, some shredded carrots and one deviled egg.  The egg was tasty but I skipped with tomatoes and carrots.  The generous helping of crab was very good with the mix of greens

Sauteéd Gulf fish today was Speckled Trout, served on cornbread and crab dressing with a Meyer lemon beurre blanc and some snow peas.  The perfectly cooked fish was wonderful with the flavorful stuffing and sauce.  The peas were on the crisp side but with good flavor.  This was a rich and excellent plate of food.

Their Housemade Peppermint ice cream is one of my husband’s favorite desserts.   It is a creamy ice cream with just the right amount of mint flavor.

Butter Rum Budino was not as good as I’ve had before.  There was a lot of whipped cream in proportion to the custard and caramel that left the flavor profile a little lacking.  It was still good but the balance has been better.  The thin buttery cookie, on the other hand, was simply divine.  We enjoyed a nice mug of coffee with dessert.
