The New Frontier, Turtle Lake, WI., 1/5/25

The New Frontier  is a casual dining spot in a free-standing building on the highway.  They serve breakfast and lunch and in addition to their large menu have posted specials on a whiteboard, including lots of pies and cakes.  The simple interior is mostly Coke-related items with Formica tables and red chairs on a black and white floor.  The dining areas are 2 rooms on either side of the kitchen and service area.  Service was efficient and friendly and delivered by a well run staff.  The place was clean and well lit with generous and reasonable portions of food.  I will probably go back and try more things in the future and hope you will too and let me know what you tried.  I couldn’t find much history about the place but it is a winner.

Food

The Homestyle  Hash was roast beef tossed with hash browns mixed with onions and green peppers and served with 2 over easy eggs and toast.  The beef was a bit dry and chewy but the mix of hashbrowns and meat had lots of flavor.  They nicely put the eggs to the side which kept them from overcooking on top of the hot hash.  The housemade sourdough bread was cut thick and made excellent toast.  It came with butter inside the two pieces.

The “Frontier Stacker” starts with hashbrowns topped with one biscuit splint in half topped with a sausage patty and egg of your choice and then it is all covered with biscuit gravy.  The gravy had additional sausage in it so it was a meat-rich plate.  The gravy had a good consistency as did the biscuit but the crispiness of the hashbrowns gets lost under all that gravy.  Even so, they were wonderful mixed together.  It was a plate I’d order again.

They sell cinammon and caramel house made rolls but they were out of caramel so I got a cinnamon to go.  It was huge and filled with rings of cinnamon.  The icing was seasoned with something that I couldn’t put my finger on and I wasn’t sure I was a fan.  By later that afternoon the roll was already drying but it was big enough you could eat out of the middle.  I wouldn’t be tempted to get one again but I might be tempted to try a caramel roll because it would be moister and wouldn’t have the flavor of the icing.
