Kennedy’s Cafe, Somerset, WI., 10/5/24

exterior – 260 Main Street, Somerset, WI., 54025

Kennedy’s Cafe was a small town cafe on the main street of Somerset.  Mike Kappers and his family bought it from the Parnell family in 2018 and renamed it for his then second-grade daughter.  The small building has been a cafe for years.  The first floor had a few stool seats at a counter, a few booths (with red-topped tables) and a couple of center wood-topped tables.  There was additional seating upstairs but I didn’t visit, nor did I visit the basement where the men’s bathroom was – the ladies was on the ground floor.  No music was in the background but the place was packed so conversation filled the air.  It had lots of lights as well as windows to the street and the walls were covered with some photos and tons of funny-saying signs.  Service was super friendly but a bit slow (probably due to the crowd).  A cozy little place that serves only breakfast and lunch.  It was fun to visit but the food was mostly bland.

Food

The Chicken Bacon Ranch sandwich contained crispy (you can opt for grilled) chicken tenderloins, crispy thick-cut bacon, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, romaine and their house ranch dressing.  Sandwiches come with chips which can be changed to fries for $1.  The chicken was a bit dry but it did have a nice coating.  The interesting part was that the fries had the same coating.  I’ve had coated fries before but these were very coated and almost lost the taste of the potato.  They were crispy but it was too much coating.  The bread the sandwich was on was fresh with excellent flavor and the bacon was thick and crisp.

The Kennedy Sirloin was a sandwich with sirloin steak topped with sauteed onions, green peppers and covered in melted swiss cheese.  I imagined it to be a bit like a cheesesteak on bread but the gristle had not been cut from the piece of beef so it was tough to bite through.  Perhaps that’s why cheesesteaks are often made with sliced meat.  The meat was well seasoned but did not fill the bread.   There were a ton of green pepper and onion pieces which added flavor.  The fries were the same coated ones that came with the chicken sandwich.

  1. Would love to have ordered breakfast to go but they wouldn’t pick up the phone even at 7:10. Drove past and lights were on…..now I’m running late for work so didn’t stop.

    1. Bummer! They seem to have service issues – we waited a long time when we were there. If you try again let me know what you think! Thanks for your comment!
