Jewel of the South, New Orleans, 12/18/24

exterior – 1026 St Louis St, New Orleans, LA 70112

Jewel of the South is a reimagined bar concept in an old house.  A regularly changing menu accompanies an innovative cocktail program.  They serve dinner Wed to Mon and lunch on Fri and Sat.  Seating is on 2 levels with a bar and patio options on the first floor and a party room on the second level.  The ceilings were high, music was in the background, windows to the street added to the lowered lighting, some carpets were on the floor to help with noise, exposed brick and wallpaper are on the walls and there is bench seating matched with small unclothed tables.  Service was very friendly and efficient.  Many come just to drink and chose foods from the regular menu but we were there in the holiday season and tried their Reveillon menu – 4 course tasting menu.  It was a nice dinner and I would recommend you give it a try.  (For another review check it out on Melhuang1972).

Food

The Reveillon 2024 menu started with smoked hock and pearled barley broth.  This was a fabulous bowl of flavorful ham and barley in a light broth.  The tender ham was well matched with the perfectly cooked grain.  Yummy.

Devils on Horseback were on foie gras spread toast.  The Devils on Horseback were bacon-wrapped dates which were good on their own but even better when paired with the rich smooth foie gras and the crunch of the bread.  It was hard to figure out how to eat but well worth the effort.

Rabbit, Trotter and andouille pie had an “Applejack rabbit” sauce.  This was one pie for 2 and that was plenty.  The good crust was surrounded by a sticky well reduced sauce.  The inside of the crust was stuffed with flavorful ingredients, some smokey.  It was tasty.

Christmas cake came with smoked chocolate on the side.  The cool smooth chocolate was very smokey and better when mixed with the warm moist cake.  The cake was filled with raisins and fruits and not that sweet.  They were odd eaten alone and much better eaten together.
