Manhattan Deli, Des Moines, 4/25/26

exterior – 3705 Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines, IA 50312

Manhattan Deli serves classic deli sandwiches and has been doing so for 40 years.  They have a large array of choices as well as a daily special that knocks a dollar off the price.   It’s a large place with a long counter where you order, that also held some sandwich samples and salads to go.  There are some tables in this room but also a second room with lots of booths and tables.  Lots of windows keep this second room bright and the walls are decorated with art and such.  The service people were friendly and the place was clean and fairly popular judging by the crowds but the sandwiches didn’t spark for us so we trashed them and went back for another Chicago Italian beef from A Taste of Italy.

Food

The Thursday special was a sandwich containing oven roasted turkey, pepperoni, capicola, Swiss, mild fried peppers, mayo, oil dressing and Manhattan seasoning on a hoagie bun. The bread was very soft – not toasted inside or out.   It was well stuffed but the turkey was so mild and the peppers and dressing couldn’t give it any interesting flavors.

The Little Italy was a warm Italian sub with pastrami, hard salami, provolone, Swiss, onion, mild fried peppers, brown mustard, mayo, seasoning and oil dressing on a hoagie bun.  Again a very soft, untoasted bun that was well stuffed with ingredients, which were well distributed.  The pastrami was tender but needed more seasoning for my tastes and the peppers were indeed mild.  Nothing wrong but nothing special either.
