M & M Hots, Elmira, NY., 6/17/26

building – 212 Baldwin St, Elmira, NY 14901

M & M Red Hots has been a family owned business for over 100 years.  They have photos of the founders and the relatives that took over on the wall of the place.  Andrew Patros opened it in 1919 and then his sons took over.  A longtime employee then bought the company and now her granddaughter Katie Seymour and her fiancé Ryan Gllagher have taken the reigns from Katie’s dad.   They did close for a couple years during Covid but Katie was anxious to bring it back, in that it’s been in her family 40 years.  There are 3 ‘U’ shaped counters for seating with one looking out at the street and the cooking area.   They are known for their hot dogs that come topped several optional toppings.  We chose the meat sauce, mustard and onions – a classic combination.  They are cash only and also sell hamburgers but I saw no one eating anything but hot dogs with meat sauce.  It’s an institution you should try.

I found a list of their available toppings on their Facebook page.  As I said we got the classic combination of meatsauce, onions and mustard but they also offer ketchup, relish and mayo.  The hot dogs are very juicy and the result is a tasty product.  I was happy with one, since other meals were in my future, but I could see how you could eat several at one setting. The meat sauce was not spicy but well cooked till the meat was almost velvety.  They put lesser amounts of mustard and onions so it made a good blend without any flavor dominating.

We supplemented our one hot dogs with an order of fries.  They were crispy, hot and plentiful.  However they did not have any seasoned salt or other components that would make them better than most French fries.  Call them good but not exceptional.

  1. The bank examiner in “It’s a Wonderful Life” was from Elmira but he didn’t mention M&M. ;^)

Neat-looking place! It’s interesting that they don’t call the hot dogs “coney dogs” or “coneys” like we do here in the Midwest, but I’d scarf down a couple just the same – just sauce and mustard on mine, please!

    1. Well I’d forgotten about the Wonderful Life connection. Thanks!

Yes all regions seem to have their names for similar items. We’d call them a chili dog in Texas. Sauce and mustard definitely but I love the crunch of raw onions too! Thanks for your comment!
