Sandy Shores Cafe took over the building that used to house the Lake Shore Cafe and although the new owner, Sandy Marsland and her partner Bob Truchon have made changes you’ll easily recognize it. Even some of the staff are still working there, which is a good thing when you know how welcome Priscilla makes all the guests feel. A coworker suggested that Marsland could name a restaurant Sandy Shores should she ever open one and in July 2021 she and Truchon did just that. They’ve tried to keep the prices low and portions generous but it’s a difficult challenge, however whatever they’re doing it seems to be working by the number of folks patronizing the place. They’ve kept the menu similar to before and offer daily specials which they publicize on their Facebook page. They have a combination of seating options with counter stools, free standing tables and booths. Along the window wall is a direct view of Lake Superior. It’s comfortable with lots of parking available around the outside of the building. The food is good, simple and plentiful and along with the great service you can bet I’ll be back. Hope you try it if you are in the area.

Food
We had the Patty Melt which is a 1/3 pound burger with cheese and grilled onions served on marble rye grilled toast. It came with potato chips and pickles or you could upgrade to fries. We asked to have the meat medium rare and stayed with the potato chips. It was excellent. The patty was cooked perfectly and dripped with tasty meat and onion juices. Lots of cheese melted over the thick formed patty and the toast tasted like it was cooked on the griddle. The only criticism would be that the meat patty didn’t fill the toast pieces but they were tasty on their own and also had melted cheese on the slices. The potato chips were from a bag and fine at that cause this sandwich was the star. I’d get it again without a doubt.

That patty melt looks terrific (although I like mine without onions)! Hopefully the bread came from Ashland Baking.
OOOO – I like onions, sorry but I’m sure they’d leave them off. Most accommodating staff, especially Priscilla. Don’t know if the bread was from Ashland but wow that is great bread. We love their baguettes and Italian white. Amazing bakery for such a small town. Do you live in the area?
I live in southern Wisconsin but spend a week in the Cable area every year, and sometimes we head over to Ashland.
Thanks! We have a place in Delta where we try and spend a week once a month. We used to be able to get a Delta flight to Duluth but the times changed so now we drive up from a flight from Minneapolis. That’s made it so we can try new places in between.
Kudos on ordering a patty melt. They are a favorite of mine.
Thanks! I am a fairly recent convert but glad I did!
