Ogden’s North Street Diner, Madison, WI., 9/12/26

exterior – 560 North St, Madison, WI 53704

Ogden’s North Street Diner doesn’t have a website just a Facebook and Instagram pages.  The Facebook page mostly addresses closing and opening variations – like what we encountered the day we were there.  We were there shortly after opening and very much enjoyed our breakfast but it was quickly growing too warm in the place due to an AC malfunction.  The open door also allowed a large supply of some kind of stinging insect to invade and make dining less comfortable.  The medium sized place was packed, with larger parties having to wait for a table.  Small, close set tables, windows facing the street, an open ceiling and framed maps and mirrors made up the interior decorations.  Parking was as you can find it on the adjacent streets. Service was fun, friendly and helpful and the food was quite good.  I would definitely go again, when the AC is working, and hope you’ll also give it a try.  There were a lot of good sounding things on the menu but we both went with one of the daily specials and both were outstanding.

Carnitas hash also contained grilled onions, poblano, mushrooms,, potatoes and scallions with two eggs over easy and toast.  My husband particularly liked that the eggs were on the side rather than on top of the hash, so they stayed runny.  The chalkboard omitted the inclusion of potatoes in the hash so no side potato was offered but you did have a choice of bread and he chose sourdough.  It was a very tasty hash but the bread was forgettable.

The Veggie Omelette contained onion, asparagus, spinach, mushrooms, and mozzarella.  I’m sorry I didn’t take a photo of the inside – I was busy batting bugs – but it was packed with lovely fresh vegetables and a stringy mozzarella.  A great combination with a fluffier egg forming the outside of the omelette.  The hashbrowns were nicely browned on both sides and not greasy.  Together these made a fine plate.  The rye toast had good flavor but was way too dry to eat.

    1. Thanks! It was a good place but they were having a bad environment day – lol. To know we enjoyed despite all the problems says a lot.

  1. Another Madison place I’ve never been! And since you were in the general area I hope you had a chance to visit Stalzy’s Deli.

I wonder who Ogden’s bread supplier is. There are several excellent bakeries in the city so disappointing toast should never happen!

    1. I’m sure Ogdens bread is usually better – they were having a hard day. But bet there are a number of fine bakeries in town. We did not get to Stalzy’s. We were just in Madison 2 nights- mainly to revisit Nook and our third night we were in the Driftless area.
