Paco Meralgo, Barcelona, 11/13/16

Paco Meralgo is a reasonably large place with two rooms of small tables, bar seating on two sides of the kitchen and bar seating around some of the walls. We could not get a reservation so we showed up when they first opened hoping to get one of  the unreserved seats at the bar.  It turned out they did have a table available which does give you a bit more room, but everywhere here seating is tight.  Service is friendly and efficient but it doesn’t have the feel of a place to sit and linger over your meal.  Nevertheless, it does serve some tasty food with a large selection to chose from.   Continue reading

Can Solé, Barcelona, 11/13/16

Can Solé is a good sized place with two dining rooms downstairs and additional dining upstairs.  I didn’t go up to see the size of the room upstairs but a lot of people headed up there. In fact the place was full; I overheard several walk-ins get turned away – so do get a reservation.  This place dates back to 1903 and still has the feel of a family run operation-which a wall of photos attests to.  Not all the staff were fluent in English but we had no trouble communicating and their enthusiasm for the dishes made it easy to make selections. La Taverna del Clinic, Barcelona, 11/12/16

La Taverna del Clinic is a medium sized place with a modern feel and decorations consisting mostly of wine, liquor and champagne bottles. There is a long counter opposite a series of tightly packed tables.  Nice personalized linens and clothes set a more formal tone. It is a good sized menu with plates to share or small portions and a tasting menu. With a 10:00 pm reservation we thought it might be winding down but it serves the late crowd with the tables and bar filling up soon after we arrived. Our server was friendly and helpful and spoke good English.  We didn’t want a lot but did want to sample some of their best items.   Continue reading

El Celler de Can Roca, Girona, 11/12/16

img_4408

El Celler de Can Roca was on the top of the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” in 2013 and 2015, slipping to #2 this year. It still is a total dining experience, not just a meal. Located a short train ride from Barcelona, Girona is a tourist heavy town with shopping and tours of the locations where the popular TV show “Game of Thrones” has been filmed.  The restaurant takes a cab ride from the train station, as it is not right in town.  In an ivy covered building with a lovely enclosed patio is the very modern dining area.  As expected they have tons of service people and yet they overlooked the fact that one of their service carts  (which are located throughout the dining space) was located so close to our table
that they had to bump into me every time they opened a door or bent down to get something.  It was a very odd thing for a restaurant of this caliber, but they either noticed or heard me talking and pretty soon the cart was moved enough that we could both be in the area without colliding. Sense Pressa, Barcelona, 11/11/16

Sense Pressa is a small place with walls lined with wine and spirits.  There are only about 6 tables so reservations are a must and well worth the effort to get one.  Owner José Díaz keeps a close eye on the dining room and seemed to know many of the customers.  The menu is available in Spanish, Catalan and English and luckily he and his son Victor are there to help you pick just the right selections, however Victor speaks much better English.  In addition to the menu listings there may be specials of the day. Victor also is the wine buyer and was most helpful in that department. It was a thoroughly delightful evening in their house.   Continue reading

Bar Cañete, Barcelona, 11/11/16

Bar Cañete is primarily counter seating, some facing the open kitchen, and a couple tables in front and back.  They offer a menu of plates to share and a couple of specials for the day. The staff were helpful in choosing what to try, if we only wanted to try a few plates.  They also helped pick one of the many wines by the glass to go with the food.  Everything was good but not as spectacular as the reviews had made me think it would be. Nevertheless it was a nice experience and the chef was observant enough to note that we had already ordered shrimp and so she left it out of the sweetbreads order, so as to not duplicate.   Continue reading

Montlake Cut, Dallas, 11/5/16

Montlake Cut is a Nick Badovinus concept restaurant specializing in Pacific Northwest foods.  It is medium sized with fairly close tables and bar seating which seemed to be for walk-in guests.  The decor is nautical with bench seating that reminds you of seating on a boat and various boating signs, etc used as decorations. There is also a large aquarium toward the back bar. Service is helpful but staff are stretched so order while you can. In their defense, the night we went they called to see if they could move up our reservation by an hour as somehow they had gotten overbooked, which may have attributed to server overload.   Continue reading

Gresca, Barcelona, 11/11/16

Gresca has about a dozen tables with a open kitchen in the back of the house. They offer longer tastings but at lunch they have a nicely priced lunch tasting menu with 2 choices for each of three courses. The friendly staff spoke good English but the majority of talk I heard was in Spanish.  One large mirror adorns one wall and otherwise it’s just ecru colored paint. Lunch had a full house of patrons.   Continue reading

Alkimia, Barcelona, 11/10/16

Alkimia is a little hard to find, marked only by a discreet sign by the door and dark interior. We ventured in and up the stairs to find no reception desk or person but obviously tables.  They have only been in this location since June, after taking a year off for a move from their previous location of 13 years.  There are two rooms upstairs, along with private party rooms, one of which serves a more limited menu. Everything is very stylized including the uniforms of the personnel, the dishes and the modern decor in the rooms, but the ornate ceiling shows the building’s age. In the main dining room with the open kitchen, there are 6 tables and you have a choice of two tasting menus or a la carte dining.   Continue reading

Restaurant Can Pineda, Barcelona, 11/10/16

Can Pineda is a small restaurant of 2 rooms with wine barrels overhead and photos decorating the walls.  The building started as a place to purchase wine and the barrels used to store the wines have long been empty but now serve as a decorative touch.  It has been a restaurant for over 100 years with the current owners in place for 45 years, a sister and brother team.  You enter into the smaller room that is mostly taken up with a bar/counter and pass through a short corridor filled with cases of iced down meats and seafood and cartons of fresh mushrooms and vegetables. It bodes well for the quality of the food to come.  There is a fairly large menu along with several specials of the day. Continue reading

La Bitta, Venice, 10/22/16

La Bitta is a very small place and the tiny tables are close but with a jazz soundtrack in the background and lower ceiling it makes for a cozy setting.  It is very casual  with paper napkins and table covers and no superfolous elements on the plates. A variety of languages were spoken in the packed room and the friendly and helpful staff handled it easily. With the close and full room the sound level was noisy but not to a point that conversation was difficult. A sign on the door said it was full and thus not a lot of popping in by people looking for a table.  Don’t be late for your reservation as they do turn the tables so each seating is allowed a 2 hour time window. It is a cash only restaurant. Fiaschetteria Toscana is a medium sized place with a display of their fresh fish on ice to greet you, and you can see the staff come get them as you order.  There is also a case of the desserts in front to equally temp you.  You’ll hear a mix of Italian and English spoken but the staff will make you feel like you are the most important visitor they’ve had all day. Our waiter Claudio waited on us during our visit several years ago and is still there providing fun and helpful service.  He was happy to split a number of our dishes so we could try more things.   Continue reading

Anice Stellato has 2 rooms with low ceilings and lots of wood. A beautiful terrazzo floor is set against the wood carvings on the side panels and otherwise minimal decorations. The good sized tables are tended to by friendly servers, ours being the co-owner, and set with paper linens. There is a cozy and peaceful vibe to the place even though it was filled to capacity that night.  They have a small menu that is presented in both Italian and English, but Italian seemed to be the main language I heard.   Continue reading

Da Fiore is a medium sized place that is made up of basically 2 rooms – one quite formal and then a very small, more casual room that looks out onto the canal.  We hadn’t been in 6 years and this visit we sat in the bigger room which I preferred to the smaller room that felt cramped. The tables are set with fine linens and beautiful local glassware and the waiters are formal yet quite helpful. It is old school enough that the “lady’s” menu has no prices. There was a mix of languages within earshot. We were there for lunch and it was not full.   Continue reading

Antiche Carampane, Venice, 10/19/16

Antiche Carampane is another regular stop for us in Venice but the last few trips it has really been a standout. Another small place with tightly packed tables that are always full of locals as well as tourists.  There is often one bigger table of young people out for a night of great and reasonably priced food with friendly service. I will admit I wasn’t sure about the friendliness of the staff but after a number of visits they have really warmed up. It also helps to let the staff direct what you get – they know what is freshest and the best way to present it.  We give them an idea of how much we want and they won’t let you down – this applies to wine too.   Continue reading

Alle Testiere, Venice, 10/19/16

Alle Testiere has been a regular stop for us in Venice for years and unfortunately it has also become a regular stop for way too many other tourists. There are only 11 tables and while at lunch it used to be a place you could drop by, that is no longer the case. Reservations are a must and for prime times you may need to make them a week out. The same staff works there but this visit it seemed less interesting, or maybe I’ve been too many times.  The appeal of this place was the use  of fresh local cuisine, sometimes classic and sometimes with a twist. This visit the “twists” didn’t work for me but their classics met my expectations.  There are a couple really bright spots to Alle Testiere, though, one being the wine selection. Luca always comes up with something reasonable, different and tasty for you to try. The other bright spot is his wife’s desserts. They are generally quite good and change on a regular basis.   Continue reading

House of Gyros, 7/5 & 10/14/16, Mesquite

Building

House of Gyros is a small family run operation in an eastern suburb of Dallas.  They are attempting to open a second location so sometimes the Greek husband, who is the chef, is not there. He has trained some new folks but when he is there the magic is in the food. His wife, who is actually Italian, runs the front of the operation and she is as wonderfully friendly her husband.  They do lots of take out orders and can get a good crowd at lunch. The plates are generous and every time I’ve been there they bring out complimentary loukoumades, or Greek honey puffs, for dessert.  It’s an unhandy location but worth the drive if you have a craving for Gyros. Cable Cafe is a small place that you’d easily drive by but inside you’ll find good, solid home cooking. It’s made up of a counter that seats about 6 and a dining room of another 6 tables. The bathrooms are around back, so you have to walk outside to use them.  There’s usually one waitress, one cook and a counter full of ‘regulars’ sharing conversation. Shirley, the owner, is usually in the kitchen and Jamie is waiting out front. They are a perfect in-tune pair of workers.  It is cash only.  The place is filled with whimsical decorations which can entertain you if you sit in the dining room and have to wait for food. Snag a seat at the bar if you can and whoever is there will start a conversation with you in no time. Also Jamie will keep your cup filled and you can get a glimpse of the other food coming out of the kitchen.   Continue reading

Søllerød Kro is a short train ride, to the northern suburbs of Copenhagen. It is located in a large house like building divided into many smaller rooms for dining or private parties. It has been a restaurant for over 100 years with one current employee having worked there  32 years.  They received their first Michelin star in 2006. The atmosphere is formal with suited waiters and lots of silver trays, however the servers are happy to provide the diner with additional information about the food if you ask. For example, we were unfamiliar with cowberries and the waiter told us about them and then brought out a container of them for us to see.  Outside there is a large patio with more casual dining.  They offer 2 tasting menus as well as a la carte options. We chose the longer Signature tasting for our Sunday brunch meal. Continue reading

Kadeau moved to a this location as of last January. They have a atrium next to the main restaurant where your meal starts and could end with after dinner drinks if you choose. They have an off-site garden on the island of Bornholm where the original restaurant is located.  Many of their herbs and vegetables are grown on the island from which they get weekly deliveries.  The kitchen is open from the dining room and entry and it buzzes with activity. The various chefs bring out each course and do final preparations and explanations.  All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Magnus Kofoed, one of the owners, kept a close eye on the dining room to make sure all went smoothly.  He and his brother Rasmus (no relation to the Geranium chef) and Nicolai Nørregaard, who were all childhood friends (Magnus and Nicolai had their first job together at 11), are chef/owners.

Geranium has undergone some changes to the interior of the restaurant since we were last there. There is now an open kitchen in the main dining room, the banquet seats have been replaced with comfortable chairs, wall coverings have been removed to expose more windows and the Paul Bocuse Award Statuettes are now in a case out front. It continues to offers top notch service and an extraordinary view from the 8th floor of the non-descript building it is hidden in, as well as stunningly beautiful and flavorful food. Chef Rasmus Kofoed is still in the kitchen and as welcoming as ever. They offer one tasting menu at lunch and dinner for all guests and wine or juice pairing options.  There are no upgrades, supplements or silliness, just an afternoon or evening of deliciousness and pampering by the excellent staff. You could walk by and miss the opening for AOC, marked by a small sign on the street. But once you enter you find the red carpeted stairs and signage that leads you up and then down a set of stairs into a series of coved ceiling rooms where the well spaced, nice sized tables are draped long and the linens are rich. The table spacing allowed for private conversation while still having a buzz in the room. The lighting system keeps the room well lit yet still cozy and a low shelf along the wall holds vases full of lovely white roses. You enter into a long hall that is enclosed wine storage on one side and ends in the first part of the kitchen.  The temperature was a bit warm for me but it got better as the night wore on. The service was the best ever – very friendly, helpful and fun. Continue reading

Noma, Copenhagen, 9/23/16

This is a repeat visit to Noma and while the food seemed better this time it felt like there was even less of it.  There are only about 12 tables and most are filled with 2 persons, some of which will be paying for 4 guests as those tables are “seen” for 4 by Noma.  It is a very strange situation.  Reservations are hard to come by and are way more frequently available for 4 persons than 2.  They suggest taking a 4 top and trying to find someone to sit with you which is difficult if you don’t live in Copenhagen. You can find some people looking to hook up on Chowhound but why the restaurant doesn’t offer a Shared Table, as they used to, for all of us 2 top travelers is beyond me.   Continue reading

Antica Trattoria Della Pesa feels like it’s in an old house as the rooms ramble through it, each decorated with memorabilia and wine bottles.  We went because I had to try their ‘fried risotto”.  It is a fairly large menu with lots of classic options.  We started with pasta and porcini mushrooms which was buttery and finished with a light sprinkling of parmesan.  It was simple yet elegant and delicious. The pasta was very thin and had a tendency to get clumpy but it was too good to care.   Continue reading

Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia consists of 2 dining rooms both filled with art. We were seated in the smaller of the dining rooms with mostly non-Italian diners. The larger room had more wall art but each of our tables had a metal animal on it as decoration. Maybe because of the art but the lighting was a bit bright to me but the service could not have been more attentive and welcoming. They offer a couple tasting menus as well as a la carte. This night we chose to go the latter direction.   Continue reading

Del Cambio is a fairly large restaurant in Turin, about an hour on a high speed train from Milan. There has been a restaurant in this building since the 1700s which has hosted the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Mozart and Maria Callas during its time.  One side of the formal dining room is windows which look out to lovely buildings that at one time were the seat of government.  According to a waiter, some government officials would dine and relax  and only return to their job when summoned by a wave out the window across the street. The dining room behind us with the mural was the original room and where we sat was more of a covered porch area, but now that area is the formal one and a piano and paintings have made the other more casual.   Continue reading

The staff were nice and friendly that were helpful and attentive. We chose the degustation tasting and the pacing moved along at a nice pace without too much lagging.  Most things were served more warm than hot and with the ingredients sounding better than the end result. The food was good but a little soulless, but overall it was a pleasant dining experience, just not one to repeat.   Continue reading

It is a fairly small menu at lunch but a large wine list.  The waitstaff was helpful and opinionated but there was a small misunderstanding in that our tartar did not get ordered, which turned out to be okay. Sprezza is a large place that has been open since the end of April. It got lots of hype due to chef Julian Barsotti being the man behind the food, as he has been responsible for well regarded Nonna.  However if this is how he imagines the food of Rome to taste, he needs to visit there again. Overall it left a non-impression, as the flavors were mild in everything except the nice spicy pepper to sprinkle on your pizza. Mis Cazuelas is a really small place of about 5 tables and a counter. There is another larger version further down the street but this cozy location is way better food even though it offers a more limited menu (not everything on the large menu is available at this smaller, original location). Their lunch food is fine but it’s the breakfast (served anytime) that’s my favorite there. It is a cash only place and little English is spoken, but you can get by with pointing at the menu. The kitchen is behind the bar seats and the constant patting that is the background sound is the lady making fresh corn and flour tortillas, as well as the thicker ones for gorditas. Michelin three star Chef Joshua Skenes was in the kitchen and when not supervising or inspecting he was cooking. Melisse is a fairly large restaurant located in Santa Monica near Los Angeles. The chef/owner Josiah Citrin had two Michelin stars when Michelin covered the LA area. It is French cuisine presented in an soft contemporary dining room full of fairly casual people. My understanding is that the dining room was done over in an attempt to obtain that third star, but then Michelin pulled out. There were a ton of service personnel that provided efficient but not overly engaging service. I noticed that not one woman was seen on the staff except for the greeter/hostess. It was DineLA week and so in addition to their usual a la carte menu they had a special menu and the server was right to steer us to it as it contained a couple items not usually on the menu.  It our usual over-ordering way we also threw in one a la carte item and ordered the optional add-on for the DineLA menu.  But let me say that I’m glad we did cause then we got to try so many things.  This place is an amazing value for the flavor they deliver! Normally this would be nice but on the days when the temperature is higher than the average the dining room does get warm. It is a modern design with warm and very friendly service people. They made the experience as opposed to the food.  We were there at lunch and the menu is all a la carte. Continue reading

Providence, Los Angeles, 7/18/16

Exterior
Exterior

This is a second visit to Providence and it hasn’t lost its touch – it’s a lovely dining experience. You can see why Michelin awarded it 2 stars when they covered the LA area. The service is top rate and friendly. There were some similarities to last year’s menu but overall it was a new set of tastes and some different takes on ones we saw last year.  A different table gave me a better feel for the dining room and although it still feels “dated” it also felt quite comfortable.  Most of the guests were dressed well but it’s LA and you’ll still find sneakers and t-shirts. They offered a seasonal tasting menu, one for DineLA week and a chef’s tasting menu which we opted for, all with optional supplements. Continue reading

Pizzeria Mozza is one of 3 restaurants run by the same group in the area. This one is medium sized, casual with a menu heavy on pizza. Service was friendly, efficient and willing to make suggestions on ordering. We were there during restaurant week and it made a reservation a must for lunch, but the waitress said they do a brisk business. They offer a number of antipasti and salad plates that are easily shared, which was our route. Continue reading

The Spot Supper Club is located on Buskey Bay just off Highway H from Iron River, Wisc. It is a medium sized place that is only open for dinner.  The low ceilings, windows overlooking the lake and collection of unusual decorations all add to the cozy atmosphere.  Co-owners Pam and Kevin Jungst are always in the house with Pam at the door playing the roll of hostess unless she’s in the kitchen cooking and Kevin is the bartender and cuts all the steaks they serve. They usually have a nightly special as well a large menu and often offer special buffets for holidays. Continue reading

Kirin Court is a large Chinese restaurant that serves cart style dim sum on weekends.  They also have it during the week but it is made to order. On weekends you best get there before 11:00 or you will have an hour wait and a hard time finding a parking spot. Once you get your number you can try and find a space to wait in the crowded waiting room full of families and large groups of friends as well as groups  of two.  The restaurant has a lot of tables for large groups so it is one place where a wait for a party of 2 can be about the same as a table for 10. Note:  Restaurant now closed

Flora Street Cafe is a beautiful new restaurant by chef Stephan Pyles near downtown. Pyles has elevated Dallas dining to a world class level with his decorative choices, outstanding service and amazing food. He still  has the southwest influence in his cooking but it is toned down to allow a broader flavor spectrum to be offered to the diner. It is an a la carte menu but he does offer a 7-course tasting menu with wine pairings that includes “chef’s surprises” which our evening were another 5 courses. It is well portioned and nicely paced and according to the waiter changes with the seasons. I truly look forward to having another culinary experience there soon!   Continue reading

Jeng Chi started in a smaller location in the same strip shopping center. It has now moved to a much larger place and therein lost some of its vibe.  When I first visited the new location the food seemed to have lost its soul, but now giving them more than a year in their new space and the prices being raised, the food is back to its former greatness.  I visit this place pretty much just for dumplings and the onion pancake. They offer a large menu but dumplings were their original claim to fame and I think that’s what they do best. Continue reading

Uchi opened in Dallas with great fanfare just over a year ago. It had previously opened successful places in Austin and Houston.  It is fairly large and very modern in its interior and exterior. It offers a la carte as well as a tasting menu and a sushi bar option.  They now have opened a more casual upstairs place which we did not try. This was my second visit and it seems to have gotten much better. When they first opened the service was hurried and the noise level intolerable, but this visit the bar was not so crowded and we were in the dining room not directly adjacent to the bar.   Continue reading

Louie’s is a bar with a restaurant that almost seems more like a restaurant than a bar sometimes.  It is often the site of post game parties and families, probably because it’s known for its thin crust pizza.  However, Louie’s has a long history of being a good bar with fine bartenders that originally attracted a lot of media people. Times have changed but the martinis haven’t and they’re still as cold and wonderful as ever.

Statholdergaarden is a large place with dining areas spread over several rooms in an historic home.  The house dates from 1640 when the Denmark appointed provincial governor lived there. Some of the interior had to be replaced because of fire but most is a reproduction of the original design. They offer an a la carte menu, a today’s menu tasting of 4-6 courses, or an extended tasting menu of 15+ courses. Ekeberg is a large restaurant in an old building designed by Lars Backer, that has been refurbished offering gorgeous views of the Oslo fjord and the city.  It is on a hill in a park that features statues. It was once the city’s place to hold celebrations but fell into disrepair.  It was bought and the owner wanted to turn it into a private residence but this was denied and instead the present owner restored it to its previous condition and it is once again the site for Oslo residents to hold their family celebrations. There are options to add extra courses and/or wine pairings to go with those courses. It would be a meal I would repeat if it were closer and if the Chef Bjørn Svensson wasn’t burned out and closing the place next month.  I’m sorry to tantalize you with this fine soon to be unavailable food, but it is worth noting the chef’s name so we can visit any other places he tries.   Continue reading

However the poor waiter could have used a helper to be more attentive to the guests.  At lunch they offer a 2 or 3 course menu and a shellfish bar.  Being right on the water we were anxious to sample some of the fresh catches of Oslo so we ordered a shellfish platter. They also make fresh lemonade and limeade drinks and an assortment of malts and shakes with their soft serve ice cream. Last year they went to a no tipping policy and instead a 20% service charge is added to your check which is used to allow both back and front house staff to make a living wage.  They were ahead of the curve in implementing this policy and for those concerned about the quality of service – there is no need to.   Continue reading

The Kitchen Table at Empellón Cocina got off to a rocky start as the early seating and supposedly shorter tasting went overtime and delayed our reservation 30 minutes. Chef Alex Stupak was in the house though, as you could see him talking with the table for 4 that faces the kitchen in the back of the restaurant, so it didn’t seem so bad to have time to look over the main restaurant’s menu. (I’ve included a photo of the front end’s menu as it looks good enough to come back for, none of it is part of the tasting menu.) The main dining room is upstairs but there is also room for diners downstairs as well as a party room, a couple wine storage areas and elegant bathrooms.  Be sure to ask to sit upstairs with the vaulted ceilings rather than the lower ceilings of downstairs where the ambiance is just not the same.  At lunch there’s a 5 course tasting menu, with extras or an a la carte menu.  You pick your choices from a list for the tasting and it is a relatively good deal. A beautiful room of about a dozen tables in the elegant I Portici Hotel in Bologna. The tables are nicely appointed and have good spacing between them.  They have live music, for which they assess diners 10 euros per person, of a harp and piano. Only the harp was playing the evening we were there which was enough as it is amplified and would have been too loud with both instruments.  The dining room is open, through some arches into the hotel’s dining room and bar, presumably so those patrons can also enjoy the music but it would have added to the noise level had there been many people in those areas. There is a balcony set with tables on 2 sides but I asked the waiter and no one is ever seated there, they are just for show.   Continue reading

This large place has been in San Francisco for over 15 years and very popular still. The tables and bar were packed but it appeared to be a lot of workers on a lunch break. The initial room looked cozy and nicely appointed with a real fireplace going but a little exploration found numerous other rooms and some very large. The fireplace turned into a cooking area midway through lunch when they began to roast a whole pig. The bathrooms are located a short elevator ride down to the basement where there is an additional party room. Continue reading

The smallest place ever, but what a find! It serves only a fixed 7 course menu and provides a reasonably priced wine list to choose from to accompany your meal. The staff are incredibly friendly but English is not a first language so communication takes some effort. The small number of seats are well spread out in this simple, modern interior. An array of different fixtures light the tables and most of the walls and ceiling are unadorned plywood. It is a paper napkin, no tablecloth and an assortment of chairs (mine swiveled!) place that has been open about 3 years and all together is a delightful dining experience. Most of the dishes have few ingredients but they are well matched and seasoned that makes for simple  and very tasty food. Continue reading

They serve only a 7 course tasting menu at dinner and their are no upgrades, etc. only substitutions for allergies. It appears to be simple but there is often a surprise tucked underneath.  This very flavorful food is prepared with care. I would go again in a heartbeat! Continue reading

We re-visited this small wonderful 3 Michelin starred restaurant after a several year hiatus. It has been open 16 years and I believe it’s better than it was before!  Service was stellar and they offer a huge yet reasonable wine list. They have several different tasting menus and on our visit they had fresh truffles that were available as a supplement to any of the options. You could get them for one course, a few more or on everything for adjusted pricing. We chose the longer of the menus and opted for a small amount of truffle addition.   Continue reading

This medium sized place is a tasting menu only and does offer wine pairings. We chose this option for a change but I would not recommend it. I finally asked for a top off with one course and they willingly obliged but never offered the service otherwise.

Frankie and I posted a meal here last Dec. but it was so good we wanted to visit again and enjoy the meal of a different season. Not as heavy in protein courses as last meal but every bit as tasty. The surprise tasting menu at lunch is the best way to go here and seemed to be what the majority in the room were having. A smallish place that’s only been open for 3 months – it is already quite popular. This could be due to the notoriety of Chef Henrique Sá Pessoa who has not only worked at a number of good restaurants but also published cookbooks and has his own TV cooking show.  In fact, when they pour the olive oil at your table you’ll notice his picture on the label.  He stands at the edge of the kitchen providing finishing details and making sure all plates are perfect before they are brought out. He brought out a number of our courses which made for wonderful detail about their composition – and he is a master here combining texture, flavor and color.  All the staff were friendly and most helpful. There were some really good flavor combinations on the main menu but the dessert portion fell short with only the sweet potato donuts leaving you wanting more. The red

Another of the Adria restaurants named for the parallel of latitude on which Barcelona is situated. It is located in the same building as Tickets, and even shares the bathroom facilities, but is the darker more intimate half. It does have video screens and moody music but they are more in the background instead of Tickets ‘in your face’ atmosphere. 41 is a tapas restaurant till midnight at which time it turns into a bar.

Since the menu spans huge territories of taste, we opted to go with their drink pairings which I often do not care for but these were just right and they were gracious enough to

Tickets is a hot reservation to get in Barcelona and is one of several restaurants run by Albert and Ferran Adria. It was my least favorite of the several that we visited. Here the atmosphere trumped the food. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad but too much had been put into the theme of being a an old-time movie theater. The staff was mostly helpful but didn’t look like they

This tiny little place packs them in! We lined up to be in the first wave of diners as the walk in business is all served at the counter. Bigger parties can reserve tables in a back room but you’d lose the ambiance there. Our first visit we sat right across from the cooking station and it was amazing how fast 2 guys could turn out wonderful tapas.

The place for seafood in NYC! Eric Ripert has led his team to a 3 star Michelin rating for several years now, and the accolades are well deserved.  The dining room is one large room with a bar/waiting area located on one side of a wall. The opposite end of the room is filled with a huge painting of a wave which perfectly sets the tone for the place.  Totally professional service is part of the what you’re paying for

Quickly becoming a favorite spot for us in Venice, this small cozy place is really hopping. They do about 2 seatings per evening. We’ve found that the best way to order is not from the menu but just to ask what are the specials and which fish is freshest and get that. They have particular fishermen that bring just to them.

Alle Testiere has been one of our favorite spots to eat in Venice during our last several trips and thus we booked it for our first night when we’re the most jet lagged and hardest to please as well as again later in our trip. This trip, however, it let us down. While it still had a wonderful cozy atmosphere and a very helpful staff the food didn’t live up to expectations. The turbot, or Rombi as it’s called there, was overcooked and dry. In the past this has been one of the tastiest fish they’ve prepared for me but this trip it simply didn’t measure up.

Le Calandre, Padova, 4/10/14

This restaurant is not in Venice but in Padova which is a short train ride away. Massimilliano Alajmo is the Italian chef, the youngest person in history to have his restaurant awarded three stars by the Michelin Guide. He is quite personable, coming out to the table to visit as your meal starts and to say goodbye as you leave. The restaurant is serene and peaceful with obvious thought being given to many details. One detail I read about prior to going was a good warning – the table has a lovely round indentation in the center where the bread is placed in a warming package after the initial ball of yarn is removed. A fun and useful feature but a hazard for moving wine or water glasses about the table.

The greeting gougere was delicious and a small packet of crispy bread is individually placed at each seat. The doughy crusty warm bread comes a little later and is particularly good. The menu consists of 3 tasting menus and it is suggested to start with the “Classic” as we did. We also enjoyed their wine pairings

What a perfect closing night for our visit, to eat with a fellow Texan in the house! Diane and Cesare Benelli opened Al Covo in 1987 after they met and married in the US. He is Italian and the main chef while she is the pastry chef and helps in the front. Both delightful, friendly people, she was thrilled to meet us. How could we not like the place?

We ate at this place on a previous trip and weren’t wowed but read enough good comments to try again this time. Our first visit we ate inside but this trip the weather allowed the patio to be open for seating, and what a difference that makes on the ambiance! It was so lovely I don’t think the food could have been bad. The clams seemed sweeter and more tender than the nights before,

A tiny little place in a hidden plaza, but that doesn’t keep the folks away. We sat on the enclosed heated porch and understand in warmer weather they spread tables out onto the plaza. Seemed like many of the locals knew the place and the staff knew the folks coming in. We were lucky enough to be with some of those local people who helped direct our ordering.

A moderate sized portion of a former town mansion that is now a private club. Luckily you don’t need to be a member of the club to get a reservation for this 2 star Michelin restaurant. They presented us with a menu of two different tasting options however it is basically priced with how many courses you want and you can pick and choose between the menus and craft your own meal. We also chose to take their wine pairings with the meal which turned out to be a wonderful success.

This little restaurant was quite a find – the best meal we had in Frankfurt! They use local and seasonal ingredients to produce a really quality product. (We were in luck to visit during asparagus season). The interior is small but when weather permits the patio just about doubles their size. Everyone working there was extremely helpful and friendly.

A small bistro serving French style food in Germany, Erno’s was a tasty and comfortable place to have lunch. The lunch menu allows you to try a special set of choices at a much more reasonable price point, with all the elegance you’d receive in the evening. Everything was good but nothing left a mark on my memory as outstanding.

A pretty little restaurant at the end of one of the pedestrian bridges crossing over the river. The patio seemed filled more with coffee drinkers at noon but a few diners ventured inside. The staff was young and friendly (she was pushing for us to go on a city apple wine tram) which made it feel less formal than the setting would have prompted. I imagine dinner is a bit different.

IMG_9136This is one hopping place! A lot of people and not enough staff makes the service a little slow but no problem as the tables are set with an interesting peppermint and lentil spread which was unique and tasty. The amuse of spinach and tomato was a lovely little flavor explosion which we followed with their asparagus soup spiked with bacon and lemon.

Entrance to Geranium building. They are on the top floor

This is your more typical Michelin starred restaurant, with all the service perks and a choice of a long or short tasting menu. The folks bringing the trays from the kitchen all wear toques but unfortunately we were facing the window and all my photos of them were too dark. The meal is definitely choreographed with the presentation of the item, the saucing or garnishing done table side, a break in the middle for a course in the kitchen

One of my favorite stops in Copenhagen! This small but happening restaurant has its own gardens where they grow their produce and sources their meat and fish through dedicated local producers. This combo allows them to provide an amazing quality of food. The taste content is excellent. This is a small place that states it is focused on food, no fuss or muss and is certified organic. You have 2 menus to chose from, omnivore or herbivore – same number of courses and price. We chose the omnivore and the accompanying wine pairings. An extra was offered (our asparagus) as is a cheese course. Emphasis on simplicity and quality are good credentials to me
